I'm a Bad Blogger.

Hullo,

Yeah, I know I haven't posted in a while...been busy, trying to do a million things at once. Doesn't work so well. Ah well...I HAVE been drawing! Here are some observational sketches, many events planned this summer, including the ROM, Zoo, and Subway Sketching.

Let me know what you think of this stuff, and any improvements anyone can suggest, as well as which are your favourites, as I'm preparing a portfolio.

Cardboard?

Here are two drawings I did - on random pieces of cardboard I found at work. They were about to be thrown out, so I figured what the hell. These are digitally colored versions...I think I'm going to try to color them in pastel. I think the guy may be a character I'm going to work on...have some interesting plans for him.

So here are some more gallery sketches and a sketch of some random musicians playing at the Distillery. Man, now that the weather is nice - that's definitely a place I'd love to hang out...there, and flippin' France and England. Yeah...I know the two don't coincide, but hey, a guy can dream right? Oh...Europe.

I'm Back!

Hi,
Yeah...I've been...not here for a little while. At the behest of Sarah, I'm posting, but moreso because I felt guilty and have been meaning to - but a various amount of things have been keeping me from doing so. Summer began, and I started working at the Ministry of Transportation from the Government of Ontario. It's an alright job. I've been working 40 hours then coming home - pretty tired, not really doing much at the job, but still abnormally tired after the day - attempting to finish my lipsync to enter into Teletoon and practicing drawing things. Lots of work. Not enough time to blog. I've been trying to get some ideas together for films, and various other things.

Anyway, less talk, more sleep, more art. That's the way it goes.
These are some drawings I did after visiting the Sandra Ainsley Gallery at the Distillery on the weekend. They had an exhibit of crazy cool (and odd) glassworks as well as other mixed media works (the most notable being a 4ft. by 6ft. portrait of a boy made entirely out of nails and a single 2 mile long piece of string wrapped around it. The first two are two glass sculpture (fairly small) and the third is one of many african mask type things they had there.
I should've written the name of the artists on the page if any of you are curious.

More Life Drawings

Yep - school's out for summer! Been doing a whole lot of nothing before kicking the summer into high gear and doing so much that I have time for nothing beginning next week. I start my new government job on Monday - hopefully I'll have time to draw and such inbetween breaks and what not. I haven't posted much since school ended b/c I haven't drawn much - and whatever I have hasn't been blogworthy. I'll start to kick my ass by tomorrow if things don't start happening. In the meantime - enjoy these life drawings which are mostly the longer poses...and a huge thanks to everyone who's been commenting!

It's been a while...

It's been a while, I know. Crunch time down at the school. Everything comes to a screeching overlap - so I haven't actually had time to post. Getting a lot of animating done - but my lipsync prject isn't going to be fully completed as I'd hoped. My scanner blows. Anyways, enough excuses. Here's a few life drawings from the past couple weeks. I just realized I hadn't posted any yet - so here we go. These are all gestures - I'll post the longer/sustained ones soon. I realize there are problems with them all, but there's something about all of them that I kinda like.

Also, a quote from Jim Hull's Seward Street Blog when he went to visit Ollie Johnston's place:

Collaging

I've been doing a bunch of collaged faces while in class. The first done in blue pencil and the second in ballpoint pen. I've noticed doing these really forces you to change up shapes and proportions so that you don't get a repetition on the same page of the same type of face. I can see an improvement from the first to the second one, so I'm going to keep doing these and trying different styles, types and shapes - as much as I possibly can. Now, to character design!

The Thief and Inspector

Here's a character I made for myself, and a potential story idea. Again, using the poly lasso and paint bucket, I'm planning on using him to learn flash in the summer - he seems very suited for it. Here's the thief's nemesis - the short, wily Inspector Briggs. I'm developing a little short story to animate soon. A model sheet will come soon of this character. Any comments and crits are greatly appreciated.

Characters and a New Method

So, yesterday, I was bored, I didn't feel like doing school work so I decided to do something else involving drawing...other schoolwork. Heh...sorta. I used a character design assignment as a basis of creating four characters. The clothing I tried to keep mundane and simple as that's what the assignment was, but I added some accessories which I wasn't supposed to - I think I'll just hand this in as an extra. These were done in Photoshop with nothing but the Polygonal lasso, paintbrush and paintbucket. I find this exercise really helps as it allows you to break down a character into its simple shapes and the limit to doing point to point forces you to take chances and try new things, I highly recommend it to anyone. More to come in this fashion soon...working on some designs as we speak...screw sleep.

Costco and Girls

So these are some sketches I did today - the paper bag sketches were from Costco while I was waiting for my bro to finish that Hot Dawg he was eatin. The paper bag was the closest thing nearby. So I started drawing people on it. The girls were just plain ol' doodles. Hope you like, and comments greatly appreciated.

Some relative's child.

This is a really quick drawing I did on my dads 50th birthday last weekend - had a bunch of people over and this kid who I'm somehow related to was sitting on the kitchen counter having a glass of water...I thought it was kind of funny so I'm putting it up.
The other drawing is some time I took out of doing work this week during the strike (which is now officially over - heading back to school on tuesday) to just play with drawing. What turned out was some brainpuke on paper. Again, I like maybe two pieces on there, but I always enjoy seeing people's process and the crappy drawings with the good - so I'm posting mine.

Scare Tactics Leica Reel

This is my Scare Tactics Leica Reel - I am not at all happy with the way it turned out, but it was something I think I needed to go through in order to learn as much as I did. I also figured out that the product of a project doesn't need to be good in order for one to learn from it, in fact, sometimes when you it turns out bad, you learn more - what not to do. Of course, that's a lot easier to say if the project isn't supposed to make any money and is there for an assignment's sake. So here it is, if for some reason it doesn't work out, refresh the page it should work.

Comments and crits are greatly appreciated, be they good or bad. I will be updating with my lipsync leica reel from this semester very soon. That one I am pretty happy with.

Back from the abyss

Yeah...so I've been busy. I feel bad for not posting anything especially since there's a bloody strike going on. Yet I've been busy animating, doodling, working on another leica reel and trying to get an exploded motherboard fixed. Yep. Those are my excuses. I'm going to put up two leica reels, as well as a bunch of animation as soon as I figure out a small file size outputting codec - enough to be able to upload stuff to video hosts. In the meantime, here are some doodles, many more to come.

Girls

So I tried doing the same process for girls as I did for the birds, and it didn't work out as well I think, but decent. I need to play around with the shapes a lot more. Pushing the expressions, I didn't vary the expressions too much (if at all) here because it was more about seeing what kind of faces/face types I could come up with. Needless to say, there will be much, much more of this coming. Comments and Crits encouraged, valued, and appreciated!

Storyboards - Character Development

This was an assignment we had to do to show the personality of our character. This is somewhat similar to my lipsync boards, which I will be posting soon - but this centers specifically on the rooster character whereas the lipsync centers more on the girl.
